Problems this course fixes

You do not know where to start

We begin with the basics: what Power BI is, how it is put together, and the difference between the free and Pro licences and between Desktop and the online service.

Your data lives in lots of different files

Connect to data stored in SharePoint, then use Power Query to clean, filter and combine it.

Your reports are rebuilt every month

Build a data model once, and your reports stay linked to the data.

You need numbers that Excel makes awkward

An introduction to DAX: create measures and calculated columns to calculate what your business needs.

Your reports do not tell a story

Choose the right visualisation, format your report clearly and build a dashboard people can explore.

Reports are out of date as soon as you send them

Publish to the Power BI service and set up automatic refresh, so your dashboards update on their own.

What you will learn

You work through a complete reporting project, from connecting to data stored in SharePoint to publishing a dashboard that refreshes by itself.

Taught by me, Rachel

After 20 years in the workplace and 12 years teaching, I know what people actually need from Excel and Power BI.

Who it is for: People with little or no experience of Power BI who want to turn their data into reports and dashboards that people can explore.

What you need: Power BI Desktop (free from Microsoft) on each computer. A free Power BI licence is enough to take the training. Get in touch if you have any questions about licences.

Before the course: your checklist

A few minutes of preparation means we spend the whole day learning. Tick things off as you go.

What delegates said

First course in a long time that I have gone away having actually learned something. The tutor was great, knowledgeable and very engaging.
